Diwali brings joy, light, and togetherness — but unfortunately, it also leaves behind heavy smog and poor air quality. Every year after the celebrations, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in many cities reaches hazardous levels due to firecrackers, vehicle emissions, and stagnant winter air. Prolonged exposure to this polluted air can cause cough, throat irritation, headaches, breathing difficulty, and worsen asthma or lung conditions.

🌬️ Why the Air Gets So Bad After Diwali

  • Firecrackers release particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and toxic gases.

  • Cooler weather and low wind trap pollutants near the ground.

  • Vehicular and industrial emissions add to the smog.

🩺 Who Is Most at Risk from Air Pollution

  • Children and the elderly

  • People with asthma, COPD, or heart disease

  • Those spending long hours outdoors

🌿 How to Stay Protected

1. Wear a Mask Outdoors

Use an N95 or KN95 mask when stepping outside to reduce exposure to fine particles.

2. Avoid Outdoor Activities in Peak Pollution Hours

Pollution is usually worst in the early morning and evening. Prefer indoor workouts or walks during the afternoon.

3. Keep Your Indoors Clean and Airy

  • Use an air purifier or keep indoor plants like areca palm, peace lily, or snake plant.

  • Keep windows closed during high-smog hours but open them occasionally when AQI improves.

4. Support Your Lungs Naturally

  • Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins.

  • Eat antioxidant-rich foods like citrus fruits, amla, green leafy vegetables, and turmeric.

  • Inhale steam once daily to clear your airways.

5. Seek Medical Help from a Doctor When Needed

If you experience persistent cough, chest tightness, breathlessness, or eye irritation, it’s best to consult a doctor promptly — especially if you have pre-existing respiratory issues.
